Key Things for Advertising on MySpace

June 26th, 2007 by Justice McCay

MySpace

If you’re going to be advertising on MySpace through bulletin advertising, or mass-commenting or messaging, be smart. MySpace is funded by a multi-million dollar company, and is actively fighting the great battle against spam through their social networking site.

Here are some key things to remember when advertising on MySpace, depending on how you’re going to be advertising your site.

Bulletin Advertising

  1. Make sure you always reveal the domain in your bulletins. Hyperlinks may be a thing of the past with MySpace. Allow the reader to know what the URL is to go to for the service or product you’re trying to advertise.
  2. Use images. Images in bulletins will play a smart role in advertising your site, service, or product. It will grab the attention of the reader, as most bulletins don’t have images in them. It’s recommended to also put the URL to your site in the image so that the reader will remember it.
  3. Use different titles. If your bulletin is going to have the same content, don’t keep reposting it. MySpace is developing anti-spam mechanisms that will eventually be able to tell what is spam from duplicate bulletins. Be smart, and use a different catchy title each time.

Comment Advertising

  1. Don’t use flashy, glittery, animated images. People hate that, especially frustrated teenagers. Your comment will just get deleted.
  2. Don’t spam your site’s URL. Try to seem like a real person. People are getting used to the whole “spam bots” going around on MySpace mass commenting them. Comment them like you’re commenting your own friend, and be sure to include the URL such as “site.com” instead of an actual URL or hyperlink.

Message Advertising

I don’t even recommend advertising a site, service, or product through messages. Teenagers are smart enough to tell this is spam. They’ll end up deleting the message, and possibly blocking you.
